What Is The Best Way To Put On Metal Roofing?

Is it best to put metal roofing on over old asbestos shingles(providing it’s less than three layers) or to tear off all the old shingles first? And does it hurt anything to tear off the shingles on one side and leave them on the other side and put the metal roof on?

  1. My dad the roofer sez:
It is best to remove all three layers before installing metal roofing. We believe you’re asking about “asphalt” shingles, not “asbestos” shingles because they are not very common anymore. If you need to remove asbestos shingles, call the HAZARDOUS WASTE people.
He strongly suggests NOT tearing off the shingles on oneside and leaving them on the other side. If you’re going to put on metal roofing, do the whole thing.

Tear off the old roof down to the tar paper and re-roof with metal IF all the wood is good.

i normally ,attached the battens, running horizontal
and about 2ft apart , on top of the shingles
just make sure the battens are secure, so use 3ins screws
then apply the metal roof ,
when you screw down t he metal, chalk the joints, and the screws, i use screws every two feet, so the wind wont catch it ,and rip it up

Most shingles are asphalt and not asbestos. If they are asbestos then it could be a health hazard to tear them off. In any case it would be better if the shingles are off before you install the metal roof.

tearing off asbestos is opening a can off worms! cover it so you dont kill anybody slowly!
