What Color Should I Paint The Front Door?

June 28, 2009 by admin

I live in a townhouse – white siding, with black shutters. It’s a wood door that is painted white. The paint is chipping, so I’d like to try a different color – something to make it pop. Would I have to paint it black to match the shutters? I really don’t want to paint the shutters either….Any other suggestions would be appreciated too!

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to help you imagine how the colors will look together. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the “painted” rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/
I think “optimistic yellow” (# 6900) might be a good choice.
You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:http://www.roomvues.com/
You can get color suggestions & for $5 they’ll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

You can paint it any color you like! I like to see front doors that are painted a warm, welcoming color to make it easy to see the main entrance and to make it seem more welcoming.
Things to take into account are what color is the roof? What things and what color are those things in a visual line with your front door? If you want to paint the front door a pretty pumpkin color, do it! It does not have to be black to match the shutters.
Some of my favorites with the white and black combo you have are a nice rich burgundy red, a rich russet or pumpkin, a rich Kelly green. Rich colors will stand up to the wide swing of color from white to black. A pastel or a neutral will have a tendency to get lost.
Add some plants to compliment your choice, a pretty door wreath and some other accessories and it will be wonderful!

If you want to make it POP like you said, try to make it a fun color, but not too crazy.
A baby blue or light purple would match black and white.
Since you’re working with such flat colors, you could really choose any color and it would work.
    Have fun with painting!

You can paint it black to match the shutters and it would look good. But to really make it pop, paint it red. I have seen that and it looks sharp.

  5. I agree with Barb, red is a great color for your door, it’s warm and inviting, and I’ve heard that a red door brings your home good luck.
